California Yacht Club prides itself on its enthusiastic and well-trained Race Management team.
To encourage new members to get involved and to keep everyone current, the Sail Committee runs a number of educational events. CYC’s Sail Committee also offers seminars that are of interest to the general sailing community.
Review the Racing Rules of Sailing with Dave Perry: Thursday, January 19, 7 p.m.
Please join us on Thursday, January 19, at 7pm to hear Dave Perry review the Racing Rules of Sailing. The RRS updated in 2017 - Dave will highlight important changes as well as reviewing all the rules. He enjoys questions from the audience, so come prepared. It is sure to be an enjoyable and informative evening, don’t miss it! This seminar is free and open to all interested racers.

Race Committee Training: Saturday, February 4, 9 a.m.
Lori Haythorn will introduce new and seasoned race committee volunteers to our new race committee signal boat, the Charles Hathaway. The session will involve hands-on race committee training on our new race committee boat and the mark set boats. There will be on shore and on the water instruction in such topics as flags, signals, communication, anchoring, recording and scoring. CYC volunteers will get to try their hand at different jobs. The seminar is free; meet in the hoist area. RC newcomers are welcome.

Get to Know PHRF: Wednesday, March 8, 7 p.m.
Learn more about the racing handicap system known as PHRF in this seminar. Learn what information is used in determining the rating for your boat, how you can possibly improve your rating, and how to apply for your rating. PHRF Chief Handicapper Robert Plant will be on hand to present a history and background of the PHRF rating system, and answer all your questions. Free and open to the public.
Sunset Series Seminars: Wednesday, April 5, 7 p.m. and Wednesday, April 12, 7 p.m.
This year we will have TWO Sunset Series seminars: the first is designed especially for Cruising Class racers and the second is our traditional Sunset Series Seminar. All who are interested in participating in the Sunset Series at any level are welcome at these free seminars.
On Wednesday, April 5, The Cruising Seminar will review how to enter and get your rating certificate, as well as starting and racing strategies, and basic rules. If you are new to racing and thinking of giving the Sunset Series a try, this is the seminar for you!
The following Wednesday, April 6, is our traditional Sunset Series Seminar designed for all racers. We’ll cover tips and tricks for a successful season, the rules of racing, in particular as they apply to Sunset, and hear from a guest panel of experts. How to get your children and family involved in the Sunset Series will be highlighted. After the panel presentation, we'll have Q&A about Sunset policies and procedures, and you can pick up the Notice of Race and the Sailing Instructions. Class splits will be announced. It's also a good time to meet and greet for skippers who need crew and for sailors who want to crew.
Match Racing Clinic: Sunday, April 23 10 a.m - 5 p.m.
We are excited to announce CYC's second Match Racing Clinic for both juniors and adults. This fun and informative day is geared towards the experienced racer who is looking to learn more about the exciting world of Match Racing. There will be a combination of on the water coaching and class room theory. Your $20 registration will include North U's Match Racing Book on a USB Flash Drive and light refreshments. The session will run from 10am to 5pm with a 1 hour no-host lunch break. We will be using the clubs Martin 242s and FJs for the adults and juniors respectively. Spaces are limited so please sign up early.
