Feel that nagging itch on your tiller hand? Here’s your chance to get back on the water for a fun, competitive, tune-up regatta and kick off the summer sailing season at speed! The Harris Regatta welcomes one-design keelboats, as well as those rated 186 or under by SoCal PHRF, for a full day of racing on the bay.

It’s a perfect opportunity to scope out your competition in advance of the Sunset Series (that begins just 10 days later), bring home some early-season hardware, or even have your name inscribed on the Fred Harris Libation Cup perpetual trophy for PHRF winners, the Commodore’s Trophy for winning one-design entries, and the Patterson Bowl for line honors in the Star class.

A minimum of 3 paid entries will be needed to form a class—based on those entries received as of 1800 hours on Saturday, April 6. Each class will compete in 3 or 4 races, as time allows. And afterward, be sure to join us on the CYC patio for a helping of post-race hospitality before trophies are awarded.

For information and arrangements regarding boat storage immediately preceding and following the regatta, contact CYC Dockmaster Evan Davis at evan.davis@calyachtclub.net or 310.823.4567.

Your $50 entry fee will include classroom and on the water coaching, entry into the regatta, and light refreshments. The day will run from 9am to 5pm with a 1 hour no-host lunch break. We will be using the Club's Martin 242s for the regatta. Spaces are limited so please organize your team and request an invitation early from the event chairs!

Our annual Starlight Series is a one-design season for Star class boats.  It is regarded as the best weekly racing available in Marina del Rey!  It provides competitive racing in a casual, Corinthian environment.  Races start Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. on Santa Monica Bay just north of the detached breakwater.   We hold up to four races each night on short courses.  We’re off the water before sunset and into the bar at the Club for no host drinks, food, and camaraderie.

Whether you are a novice or experienced racer you will find our series challenging as well as fun!  The Star fleet is very welcoming of new skippers and crew.  Skippers are often looking for crew and we invite anyone with an interest in racing sailboats to join us. Boats start rigging at the CYC hoist around 4:30, come by and meet some of the racers and see if you can line up a ride. We also welcome any interested persons to join us on Race Committee - it's a great way to watch the racing and spend a beautiful evening on the water. Contact Denny Haythorn (denny.haythorn@haythorn.org) for more information.

For more information about Starboat sailing see http://www.starclass.org/iscyra_district_5.shtml or contact the Captain of the Santa Monica Bay Fleet, Alejandro Bugacov (alejandrobugacov@gmail.com).

Since the late 1970s, Star sailors have come to California Yacht Club for the chance to have their names added to the King of Spain trophy, the sterling silver Spanish galleon that was presented to CYC by the King of Spain in 1928. Past winners are a virtual who’s who in sailing, counting World Champions and Olympic medalists among the ranks. Plan to sail on sunny, warm days with mid-afternoon breezes in the 10 to 15 knot range and experience CYC’s exceptional hospitality after both days of racing.

The King of the Hill Race is an end-of-the-season championship race for the popular weeknight Sunset Series. The “best of the best” from each of the classes in the Racing Division are invited to compete in this inverted-start race. This race will pit the best sailors in each class against each other, with the boat crossing the finish line first declared as the “King of the Hill” for that year.

Entry to this race is limited to those boats that receive an invitation. Invitations will be issued based on the final results of the 2019 Sunset Series, which ends the preceding Wednesday. Invitations will go to the top 1-4 boats in each class of the Racing Division, based on average class size for the 2019 Sunset Series. Additional boats will then be invited based on end-of-the-season standings for the Marylyn Ritchie trophy (awarded to the boat with the best overall record in the Racing Division) to result in twenty-two invited boats.

The King of the Hill trophy was a pre-existing CYC trophy that was re-dedicated to this new race in 2002. Joan Hill was the long-time Chair for the Sunset Series and a regular volunteer for CYC races. In 2003, Joanie died as a result of breast cancer and since then this race has served as a memorial to her dedication and hard work in running the Sunset Series for many years.
