California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey, hosted the inaugural J/70 Midwinter Championship West on April 1 – 3. The event kicked off on Friday with a chalk talk on a wide variety of speed and boat handling tips by Willem van Waay, a member of the J/70 World Champion team. On-the-water starting drills and practice races in the afternoon gave everyone a chance to experience the local conditions and dial-in their crew maneuvers. Four races were sailed on Saturday under sunny skies and a steady 7 to 9 knot breeze. Chris Raab on Sugoi and Bruce Cooper on USA 32, traded first place finishes and ended the day tied with Sugoi ahead on the tie-breaker. Sunday’s racing was postponed an hour waiting for the wind to settle and the fog to lift, but a brisk clearing breeze that built to 12 knots in the afternoon offered some great sailing for the last three races of the regatta. A win in Race 6 by new boat owner Jim Murrell on Huckleberry tightened the standings between the top three boats, any of which could have taken home the Championship title going into the final race. A win in Race 7 insured that victory for Bruce Cooper and USA 32 with Sugoi finishing second overall and first in the Corinthian class. Thanks to all the competitors and volunteers who made this a memorable event.
