Regattas

California Yacht Club has a long history of excellence in race management.  We host everything from Championship-level regattas to more casual weekend buoy and random leg races.  In 2017 we are proud to host the Laser Midwinters West in March, and the Martin 242 North American Championship in August.  Please see below for a listing of all our 2017 events with links to regatta documents, registration, and results.

      Final Entry List 9/12/17
Final Scratch Sheet and Starting Times

The King of the Hill Race is an end-of-the-season championship race for the popular weeknight Sunset Series. The “best of the best” from each of the classes in the Racing Division are invited to compete in this inverted-start race. This race will pit the best sailors in each class against each other, with the boat crossing the finish line first declared as the “King of the Hill” for that year.

Entry to this race is limited to those boats that receive an invitation. Invitations will be issued based on the final results of the 2016 Sunset Series, which ends the preceding Wednesday. Invitations will go to the top 1-4 boats in each class of the Racing Division, based on average class size for the 2016 Sunset Series. Additional boats will then be invited based on end-of-the-season standings for the Marylyn Ritchie trophy (awarded to the boat with the best overall record in the Racing Division) to result in twenty-one invited boats.

The King of the Hill trophy was a pre-existing CYC trophy that was re-dedicated to this new race in 2002. Joan Hill was the long-time Chair for the Sunset Series and a regular volunteer for CYC races. In 2003, Joanie died as a result of breast cancer and since then this race has served as a memorial to her dedication and hard work in running the Sunset Series for many years.

Fifteen teams, including several World and Olympic champions, representing yacht clubs from Seattle to San Diego, competed in the 2016 King of Spain regatta.

Competitors faced near perfect Santa Monica Bay conditions, with a southwest breeze gradually clocking west each day and peaking at a solid 13 knots by Sunday’s last race. Anticipating these shifts provided opportunities and challenges for racers and race committee alike.

The competition was tight, with many finishing places determined by a surf on a wave. Going into the last race, George Szabo and Eric Doyle, both from SDYC, were only one point apart. The Championship would be determined by whoever beat whom. CYC’s Ben Mitchell and Hal Haenel stood tied for third with the youngest skipper in the Fleet, Daniel Cayard, sailing for St. Francis YC with his father Paul as crew. While leading the race on the final run, Szabo’s boat rolled on a wave and his crew went overboard. Doyle won the race and the regatta while Szabo finished second overall. The Mitchell/Haenel team bested the Cayards in the last race to come in third and fourth respectively.

Thanks to all the volunteers and competitors who made this a memorable event. CYC looks forward to welcoming the Star class again in 2017.

Recap of Day 3: Sunday, March 26, 2017

The last day of the 2017 Laser Midwinters West saw starts under the Z flag, U flag, and even the Black flag.  The Radial Fleet was particularly aggressive with their starts having general recalls in both of the day's two races.  The final race of the day for the Radials had 2 general recalls before finally getting a start off under the Black flag.

Conditions were similar to Saturday, with a steady 8-10 knots starting at 220 degrees and clocking to 240 degrees.  Nice rollers made for some fun downwind legs.

In the Standard Fleet, Paul Didham (Mission Bay YC) continued his domination, finishing with just 10 points.  How nice to have a third place finish be your throw-out!  Coming in second was Juan Luis Medina Cortes from Chalapa YC with 37 points, followed closely by Cameron Feves of Cabrillo Beach YC with 38 points. Cameron was also the top Junior in the Standard Fleet.

In the Radial Fleet, Joseph Hou (Newport Harbor YC) and Gage Wilson (Edison Sailing Center) both ended up with 14 points, and Joseph won first place on the tie-breaker.  Maura Dewey (Royal Victoria YC) held onto third place with 37 points.

Many thanks to PRO Tom O'Conor and his amazing RC team for nine terrific races.  We look forward to hosting you again in 2019!

Recap of Day 2: Saturday, March 25, 2017
On Friday night Saturday's forecast called for wind in the high teens, but that wasn't realized.  We had classic Santa Monica Bay conditions, with wind from 8-10 knots starting from 220 degrees for the first race of the day and clocking to 235 degrees by the late afternoon.

The fleets were a bit more aggressive in their starts than on Friday, and a Z flag was employed for all of Saturday's races.  Even so, we had several boats scored ZFP or OCS and the Radial fleet had a general recall in their third race of the day.  The Race Committee completed all four scheduled races, with racers returning to the docks around 5pm.

In the Standard Fleet, Paul Didham from Mission Bay YC retains an impressive lead, with just 7 points.  Second place is Peter Hurley from Mantoloking YC with 25 points, and Ian Elliot from Royal Victoria YC is in third with 29 points.  Nipping at Ian's transom are Upamanyu Dutta, from Royal Bombay Yacht Club, and Cameron Feves from Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, each with 30 points.  Cameron is also the top Junior in the Standard Fleet.

In the Radial Fleet Gage Wilson (Edison Sailing Center) and Joseph Hou (Newport Harbor YC) are tied with 11 points, the tie breaker going to Gage who got a bullet in the last race.  In third place is Maura Dewey from Royal Victoria YC with 23 points.

Two races are scheduled for Sunday, and the forecast is for similar conditions.

Recap of Day 1: Friday, March 24, 2017
California Yacht Club is excited to have 81 boats competing in the 2017 Laser Midwinters West, including competitors from Mexico, Canada, and the east coast of the US.  The first day of the regatta was sailed in "champagne" sailing conditions.  The day started off sunny, and warm, with breeze of about 6 knots from 240 degrees.  Before long the wind built to 12-15 knots, and PRO Tom O'Conor was able to get off three great races for each fleet.

California Yacht Club is pleased to host the M242 class for their 2014 North American Championship on August 30 - September 3. Three days of Championship racing are scheduled, with a clinic and practice races on Thursday designed to have you ready for the first race in top form. Sailing conditions in Marina del Rey at this time of year are ideal for a championship event, with a 10 to 15 knot breeze typically filling in by noon under warm and sunny skies.

Come sail on the same waters where many championship regattas have been sailed. Experience the dedication of a race management team that has been awarded US Sailing’s prestigious St. Petersburg Trophy three times. And enjoy a full range of social activities that will be fitting complement to the on-the-water competition.

Marina del Rey is an ideal vacation destination for the whole family. Enjoy shopping experiences from chic Rodeo Drive to eclectic Melrose Avenue. Visit cultural attractions such as the Getty Museum and the LA County Museum of Art or enjoy a concert under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl. Family excursions include Universal Studios, Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm. Competitors and their guests are welcome to use the Club’s facilities during race days, including a heated pool, snack bar and dining facilities.

The Starlight Series is for Star class boats only, and it is the best weekly racing available in Marina del Rey! On Thursday evenings starting at 6 p.m. we run up to four short course races on Santa Monica Bay just north of the detached breakwater.

Whether you are a novice or experienced racer you will find our series challenging as well as fun! We invite anyone with an interest in racing sailboats to join us. The Star fleet is very welcoming of new skippers and new crew. Boats start rigging at the CYC hoist around 4:30, come by and meet some of the racers and see if you can line up a ride. We also welcome any interested persons to join us on Race Committee - it's a great way to watch the racing and spend a beautiful evening on the water. Contact Sue Service (sservice@mednet.ucla.edu) for more information.

For more information about Starboat sailing see http://www.starclass.org/iscyra_district_5.shtml or contact the Captain of the Santa Monica Bay Fleet, Alejandro Bugacov (alejandro.bugacov@d5starclass.org).
