California Yacht Club will again host many days of racing for dinghys and keelboats, with 15 regattas scheduled in 2010 for competitors of all talents and ages. This year's highlights are the King of Spain and the Star North Americans in August, when the Club welcomes back sailors from this storied Olympic class for a combined six days of Championship racing.
The season starts with the 80th Annual SCYA Midwinter Regatta the third weekend in February. We expect the Farr 30, J/80, Star, Martin 242 and Open 5.70 one design classes to return to CYC again this year. The weather can be dicey for this regatta, but most years it is two glorious days on the water in winter.
Racers can warm up for the racing season at the Spring Keelboat Regatta on April 10 & 11. April also sees the start of the 20 week Sunset Series for keelboats, followed in May with the start of the Starlight Series for the Star Class.
May racing includes the prestigious Cal Cup Invitational Regatta with the sleds once again vying for bragging rights. This year the West Coast 52s will be racing on the same weekend, giving spectators the opportunity to watch two premiere classes clash on the race course. Cal Race Week follows two weeks later on June5 & 6, a regatta which is recognized as one of the premier racing events for one-design and handicap racers in Southern California. Both these regattas bring many visitors to our club.
Junior events include the Harken Series #1 for Optis on March 6 & 7, the Sanguinetti Dinghy Regatta for Sabots on May 3, the Summer Sailing program in June, July and August and the Shadden Series in October. We are also excited to host two junior championships; the C420 Nationals on July 9-11 and the Opti West Coast Championship on September 11 & 12.
The season conludes with the Harris Series for keelboats on the last weekend in August and the King of the Hill Race for the best of the Sunset Series finishers on September 8.
It looks like another great racing season at CYC. For more information, contact Sail Chairman, Marylyn Hoenemeyer at hoenemeyer@roadrunner.com. Hope to see you out there.
